KATMANDU, Nepal 鈥?Millions of people in Nepal face severe food shortages because global climate change has disrupted weather patterns and slashed crop yields in the Himalayan nation, an international aid agency warned Friday.
Changing weather patterns have dramatically affected crop production in Nepal, leaving farmers unable to properly feed themselves and pushing them into debt, Oxfam International said in a report released in Katmandu.
The British aid agency described the situation as %26quot;deeply worrying.%26quot;
%26quot;Communities told us crop production is roughly half that of previous years ... Last year many could only grow enough (food) for one month's consumption,%26quot; said Oxfam's Wayne Gum, adding that less precipitation has been forecast this winter, which will make the situation worse.
More extreme temperatures, drier winters and delays in summer monsoons have all compounded the situation, the report said.
More than 3.4 million people in Nepal are estimated to require food assistance, and food stocks in farming communities will last only a few months, it warned.
Oxfam said Nepal will likely suffer more frequent droughts because of climate change. River levels will decline due to the reduced rainfall and glacial retreat, making it harder to irrigate crops and provide water for livestock.
%26quot;The predicted impacts of climate change will heighten existing vulnerabilities, inequalities and exposure to hazards,%26quot; the report said.
Oxfam recommended in its report that the government and international organizations intervene to ease food shortages in hill and mountain districts and provide assistance during the upcoming planting season.
The government should encourage farmers to try new crop varieties and improve water management, and it should integrate climate change strategies into government planning.
Ang Dawa, a member of a parliamentary committee tackling climate change, said its effects were already prevalent in Nepal, especially in the mountainous north.
She said her village in the foothills of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, was covered in several feet (dozens of centimeters) of snow during the winter when she was a child, but now there is hardly any snow.

Yes we have compassion for people. That is why I don't support socialism. Other people may have other reasons to appose the AGW crowd but there is no justification for supporting a fantasy. It simply doesn't help anyone. Preventing the third world from modernizing will kill millions from respiratory disease and lack of medicine. Alarmist never struck me as the kind of people that actually care about any humans as they typically see them as destroying the planet and would rather see fewer humans than helping the poor.

Africa is topped by one of the largest deserts in the world. How would an area about the size of the USA, NOT exert any influence on the rest of the continent? And Africa is famous for screwy weather and killing droughts long before man ever showed up.
We do have compassion and sympathy for the suffering. But blaming the constantly changing climate patterns of a dynamic living Earth, on man's daily activities false, and unscientific. Man is not causing these problems.
Talk about sympathy and compassion? Several years back, a tribe in Africa was and is still using manure as fuel for fire. The smoke fills the huts and causes respiratory problems. This tribe had asked about a gas-fired generator to help improve the quality of life for each tribe member.
Turns out, the big daddy environmentalists denied them the generator. Seems the use of electricity was suspect in causing global warming. Apparently it's better to burn animal poop and get the resulting lung problems, instead of using a clean-burning generator to give people a better way to live, cook, clean, and perhaps read by even a single light bulb. No, they were denied that because of Al Gore's fraud.
Since then, I realized what a fake all this global warming alarmism is. It's about control of the masses, and they're trying it out on scattered peoples.
Sympathy and compassion? Give these people a generator so they can live disease free.

Why do you favor cold freezing temperatures that kills young creatures in their first year of life. Moderate winters allow greater number of animals to survive. Cold winter kill. Well... Do you know how media work? And what is taught in schools of journalism? There's a famous rule here that is called the %26quot;principle of death-kilometer%26quot;. According to this rule, that is very true, you sell more newspapers to readers (customers) when they feel concerned. And obviously, they feel more concerned by the accident of a dog in front of their house, than by one million deaths in a very distant country. It's not a problem of compassion. There's a common saying for this: %26quot;out of sight, out of mind%26quot;.

Firstly ocean currents and solar cycles for example have more influence on rainfall than temperature. Droughts have always occured naturally and warming actually reduces drought according to the IPCC's 2007 report. If you could prove a certain drought somewhere was due to Co2 it would be all over the news. Using %26quot;climate change%26quot; is just a way of trying to get media attention.
Increased co2 in the atmosphere means plants need less water, can live in poorer soil and produce for biomass. Its fertiliser for plants.

These kinds of problems have always happened, and its better to deal with them rather than try and fight some danger that may or not exist, and that wont actually stop the natural droughts occuring. Green or humanitarian groups love to use the climate change buzzword.
If only all that money wasted on Kyoto was used for good, such as providing clean energy to the third world, sewers and clean water for the poor and solving real environmental issues. Hey ho.

I think i asked bush about global warming once...he replied i am from texas i am used to it being hot. So I got out of it if we move to texas we will be safe.
