If a company asks for editing of their existing logo, and said logo%26#039;s original designer is no longer in the picture are there legal issues (such as ownership of original design) that need to be taken into consideration?

Anyone with first hand knowledge of similar situations?|||%26gt; Are those files considered to be owned by the original designer and therefore cannot be altered without the designer consent?
Absent a very clear contract stating otherwise, the original design was a %26quot;work for hire%26quot; and all rights belong to the purchaser, and none belong to the designer.
google %26quot;work for hire doctrine%26quot; for details.
in practice, it is inconceivable that a company would be legally able to consent to allow its corporate identity to be held hostage.
